Changes to UK Peace Light Distribution 2024
In the current climate in the Middle East, the Austrian Peace Light organisation team have decided that collecting the Light from Bethlehem Nativity Grotto may not be safe, therefore at the Vienna Distribution Service on Sat 14th Dec, they will be the lighting the congregation lanterns from the Peace Light collected last year. That Light has been maintained and has been burning since it was collected from Bethlehem.
In the UK we have decided to follow the Austrian example as we too have a Peace Light that has been burning since since it was collected last year. This flame was originally kept and maintained to be used as the Peace Flame in the D-Day Memorial Services . in July. Therefore instead of travelling to Vienna and nursing the Peace Light back to the UK, we felt distributing a flame with the same origins of the Austrian Flame would be acceptable. There will still be a UK contingent travelling over to the Vienna, representing UK Scouts at the International Distribution Service.
Although, not ideal, but through the act of sharing a Peace Light originating from the Nativity Grotto, we can demonstrate our commitment to International Peace, and raise awareness of the atrocities in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
I trust you will all accept our decisions regards this years distribution, and will continue to support the International Peace Light project, sharing that "little flame" that means so much to alot of people across the UK.
